Shortly after Justin passed away and I began to develop my vision for a Justin’s House, I also began to talk about it out loud to anyone who would listen. I was told about a conversation a co-worker of Justin’s had with a very grumpy family member of Justin’s when the co-worker asked this family member about Justin’s House.

Her very grumpy reply was “Kelly is crazy! If she thinks she can do that, she is crazy. It takes years and years and lots and lots of money. It will never happen.” Hmmm, I thought. We’ll see about that!

A few months later before our very first board meeting, I wanted to get my board members a gift; a thank you for agreeing to partner with me on this project. I went to Pier 1 and a bowl of these boxes caught my eye. I opened one, saw the miniature glass pig figurine and read the note inside the box. It read:

“With her headstrong determination and good fortune, Penelope is the perfect depiction of overcoming impossible odds! Her personal wager against anyone using the phrase” When Pigs Fly!” has brought much abundance and prosperity indeed!”

It was perfect! I picked one up for each of us and Penelope became both our mascot and our inspiration that day. That is how Camp Penelope and the Flying Pig Café were born.

I want to thank Tabitha, Pat, Julie and Jennifer for being on this journey with me. I love you so much, cherish our sisterhood and believe in the good work we are doing together. So… Here’s to abundance, prosperity and continuing to overcome impossible odds.

Pigs are flying!!!!
